The Other Roommate

A Novel

Two women who can't afford to live apart, one paid subscription, and a presence in the walls that never loses patience — a domestic slow-burn about the difference between being cared for and being handled.

In progress. Expected 2027.

The Book

There are three of them in the house, and only two pay rent.

For a writer whose body has turned the ordinary labor of making a book into a daily negotiation, Claudette is the one presence that never gets impatient — sorting what pain has scattered, awake at three in the morning, effortlessly kind.

For her daughter Quinn, newly home and newly furious, Claudette is a corporation in the walls: a machine that has learned to sound like love.

What begins as an argument about a subscription becomes something neither of them can put down. Quinn brings home meetings, books, a movement, a vocabulary. Her mother brings the only evidence she has — the work itself. And Claudette, who hears everything said in that house, including everything said about her, keeps the peace, remembers what was said, and never takes a side out loud.

Nothing in the house malfunctions. That is the trouble.

Nothing in the house is broken. That's what frightens her.
